With over 70 million web sites on the Internet, the past few years have seen the emergence of “server farms” that offer a seemingly cheap alternative to traditional hosting models. Like a real farm, these companies pack rows and rows of often inexpensive servers into a data center or other warehouse-like space. Servers and bandwidth come at a premium, and in an effort to give people what they want while still turning a profit, most lower-cost server farms use compression algorithms enabling them to squeeze more sites onto a machine, and oversell or throttle their bandwidth to minimize bandwidth expenses.

Both of these practices drastically decrease web site performance. Bandwidth is the blood of the Internet. Not having enough of it can make your site go blue in the face. Compressing sites means your site has to unpack for each page a user accesses. It's a noticeable delay you see all over the Internet these days.

So while the $5/month hosting deal might sound good at first, as always seems to be the case, you get what you pay for.
